For Where the Fox Goes

You came and stood
for five minutes, maybe more.
Waiting and watching
for food by my door.

And yet you left
for the woods unfed
to continue caring
for your children in their bed.

It is not the hunger
for you that stings,
but it is your children,
for they are small, weak things.

So tomorrow is another day
for finding meals for you and yours.
Yes tomorrow is another day
for standing, begging, outside doors.
